HURRICANES

An Actor's Concert

This is a musical journey in the Germany of the Thirties, through ballads and songs written by Bertold Brecht and set to music by Kurt Weil, which takes us into the past century’s Europe in the period between the two wars.

There are stories of women who recall their sixteenth year of age, when they were still children and ready to fall in love with the first wrongdoer they would meet, women without adolescence who grew up too quickly under the bombs of the Second World War.

A prostitute recalls with tenderness and longing her love for her pimp: six long months spent together in that brothel do not fade away so easily because theirs was a true love. Meanwhile Jenny, the maid of a tavern in a small harbour town, dreams in anger of her deliverance, and her wild desire for vengeance will not die down until justice is done.

But there is also the long list of misdeeds of the bandit Mackie Messer, the main character of the Three Penny Opera, and there are the good intentions of Barbara, the young daughter of Bertold Brecht, a steady and resolute girl who knows what to take from life and from me - or at least she thinks she knows, because when love does come, it just comes.

There are the wishes, passions, memories and destinies of women, but also the weaknesses of men. These are the anonymous stories of common people like us - little everyday storms, sometimes hurricanes. And hurricanes are written in books of history when they involve the life of great people - thinkers and philosophers as well as kings, queens, emperors and leaders. The old and wise Solomon, Cleopatra, Julius Caesar, Bertold Brecht himself - they all thought they had the world in their hands: what became of them?
